Book desription: London: Chapman and Hall, 1865. First edition. Hardcover. THIS BOOK IS ELIGIBLE FOR A DISCOUNT OF UP TO 25% OFF THE PRICE SHOWN IN THIS LISTING FOR ORDERS PLACED ON OR BEFORE DECEMBER 31, 2009. (Not available in combination with any other discounts.) The genuine First Edition of Anthony Trollope's EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE novel. Three volumes in the Publisher's original scarlet grained cloth. Volumes I and II hold remnants of W. H. Smith & Son's Subscription Library labels on the front pastedowns (someone apparently attempted to remove them-fortunately without damaging the pastedowns) and Volume III's pastedown carries the entire label. Each Volume is mildly askew, with a little loss to the spine lettering. Volume I has two small ink spots to the spine and Volume II has one such spot to the rear board. Each volume has some general wear, but less than one might expect to find in volumes once part of Smith's Subscription Library. The novel was published in December, 1865 with the title pages dated 1866. Trollope intended that the tale be published in two Volumes, and, in his schedule listing the income he made from each of his works, Trollope noted "Surreptitiously printed in three volumes". (See Sadleir, entry 22, page 282.) This Trollope novel is NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND. Sadleir had "no record of 'The Belton Estate' being offered for sale either in a bookshop catalogue or at auction...." and he knew of only two private sales having taken place. Sadleir states: "As said above...first editions of this novel in any form are rare, and in original cloth very rare indeed. 'The Belton Estate' in first edition, through some hazard of publishing history which I cannot explain, has simply disappeared." (See Sadleir, entry 22, page 282.) Given his determination to find, catalogue, and acquire Trollope's works, one can conclude that Sadleir's search would have been exhaustive and diligently conducted. We have neither encountered or possessed a copy in original cloth in our own 30 years of diligently seeking Trollope's works. A RARE OPPORTUNITY FOR THE TROLLOPE COLLECTOR to acquire A COLLECTION-DISTINGUISHING TITLE. "VERY RARE INDEED" (Michael Sadleir).
