Boston & New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1956 This is the true First US printing, with all the points called for by Wilson's bibliographers. See photos. Specifically, the year "1956" is printed on the title page; the binding is brown cloth (lettered in black and silver on the spine and front cover); and there is the requisite little black triangle on the lower right corner of the rear cover. Top edge tinted black, as issued. NOT a book club edition. Near Fine condition in a Good+ dust jacket (with rubbing, short tears and a few small chips). A square, tight copy. NO owner's name or bookplate. NO remainder mark. Pages are fresh and crisp -- probably never read. "First Printing September 1956" is so stated on the copyright page, but Wilson's bibliographers say that fact has no real significance, since the statement is also present in later printings and various book club editions. See the March, 1998 issue of FIRSTS MAGAZINE (Vol. 8, No. 3, p. 46); Ahearn (AUTHOR PRICE GUIDES, Volume 1, p. 647), and COLLECTED BOOKS, THE GUIDE TO VALUES, 2002 EDITION (p. 707). The dust jacket is protected by a new Brodart clear-plastic sleeve (which was removed for photos). From the Dust Jacket: "An Inquiry into the Nature of the Sickness of Mankind in the Mid-Twentieth Century..." First American Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine condition/Good+ dust jacket. Illus. by Bryant, Samuel H. (jacket design). 8vo. 288pp.
