New York: D. Appleton & Company, 1869 Good condition (see photos). NOT a library discard. Bound in the original gilt-decorated chocolate brown cloth. Front cover features a beautiful full-color chromolithograph paste-on of the light spectrum (see photo). Also on the cover are bright gold-stamped images of the sun and stars. A telescope and more stars are gold-stamped on the spine. Old tape stains on rear cover and front endpapers. Joints neatly reglued. Front inner hinge cracked, but still holding firm. Pages are in Very Good condition but for foxing to first and last leaves. Illustrations throughout (72 are listed, including engravings of a number of scientific instruments). Frontispiece is a full-color fold-out chromolithograph of the Spectra of the Metals of the Alkalies & Alkaline Earths. Another beautiful, double-page chromolithograph is the Spectra of the Stars, Nebulae and Comets, Together with Those of Some of the Non-Metallic Elements. Double plate of Huggins' Map of Metallic Spectra. Three sepia tinted, double-page plates of Kirchhoff's & Angstrom's Maps. Appendices. Bibliography (List of Memoirs, etc). Index.
