Richard Neutraby McCoy, Esther (1904-1989) and Richard Neutra (1892-1970) with primary photographic contributions by Julius Shulman (1910-)
Book desription: A particularly fine, signed, dated, Richard Neutra presentation in this essential book on his architecture, the recipient, Warren Dorn, on the Board of Supervisors of L.A. County (1956-1972), the Board responsible for county projects and financing. Dorn had an important role in the building of the Los Angeles Hall of Records, a structure in part designed by Neutra. Below the Neutra title page inscription is a Neutra addendum to Dorn, drawing his attention to illustration 121, reproducing a Neutra sketch of the Hall of Records. Below the illustration is a signed, 7-lines Neutra note regarding the building and its place in future Los Angeles. Inscription, addendum and note are handwritten with the same bistre ink. AUTHENTICATION: From Dorn estate. Handwriting unquestionably matches multiple authentic writing examples of Richard Neutra's, written with same intensely personal style of changing the internal space around letters-sometimes from phrase to phrase-signed with characteristic capital R, graceful, outsized-without a stem-extending across all of Richard like an elliptical vector. INSCRIPTION: 3-lines, top of title page, bistre ink, signed, the Richard Neutras, 1961 date, addressed, "to our Warren Dorns-both with heartfelt wishes!". ADDENDUM: 3 very short lines, bistre ink, adjacent to publishing information, "O, please see illustration 121!". ADDITIONAL SIGNED NOTE: Below illustration no. 121, 1958 perspective sketch of the Los Angeles Hall of Records, over complete area between illustration and one below, 7-lines, bistre ink, some lower case letters as capitals, signed. Note states, "That building I hope will be "the memory of an ever greater county"-because after I am dead-the front on the hall I had designed originally as "Court of History"; may be one day-fate it be there, with the rising group around it-Luck to our leader into a great lasting future!, cordially Richard". HALL OF RECORDS: Completed in 1964: located in downtown Los Angeles; houses legal records, including probation files with offices for regional planning. T-shaped, 15 stories, it incorporates designs from several architectural firms, including Neutra & Alexander. It is known for its striking 120 ft. tall south-facing aluminum louvers designed by Neutra to modulate lighting to offices and work areas. Neutra first used the aluminum louver design in 1945 to regulate intake of sunlight to the Kaufman 'Desert House' (R. Slade). WALTER DORN: (1918-2006), early life in Pasadena: elected to its Board of Directors, mayor in 1956. Shortly after, elected from the 5th District to the L.A. County Board of Supervisors: 2 years as chairman of the board (1963 and 1964). Among his best-known achievements were his extensive efforts to contain air pollution & smog, his key role in establishing the L.A. County Music Center on Bunker Hill, and his support for the enactment of Governor Edmund G. Brown's California State Water Project (L.A. Times Obit). FORMAT: Publisher's: 1/2 gray cloth and slate-tile-gray paper boards, sewn binding in black endpapers, pictorial jacket with $4.95 price on front flap. IMPORTANCE: Distinguished by its lucid text and useful layout that reflects an exceptional understanding of Neutra and the place of his buildings & projects in modern California residential and public building architecture. Esther McCoy was a pioneering architectural historian and a Neutra authority, primarily responsible for cataloging his archive at UCLA.
