Book summary

This account of one soldier's experience as a translator at the Guantanamo Bay detention center in Cuba, where Al Qaeda and Taliban fighters were held, offers a rarely seen first-person look at how the facility operates--and includes allegations that interrogation procedures may have crossed the line into torture. Sgt. Erik Saar (now a civilian) was a decorated and loyal soldier whose training in Arabic qualified him to serve as translator. He describes the cellblocks and interrogation rooms, and offers portraits of American soldiers and prisoners, all of which convey a surreal world almost cut off from humanity. His reports include the use of beatings, sexual degradation, and religious insults, and he charges that mock interrogations, meant to look legitimate, were staged whenever Congresspeople or other oversight groups inspected the facility. INSIDE THE WIRE, co-written with Viveca Novak, a correspondent for Time magazine, includes an appendix with official documents relating to the issues in this book.
