Introduction by Carl Sandburg. New York: Minton, Balch & Company, 1928. 12mo. Black cloth, dust jacket. 43pp. Frontispiece. Very good/very good. Some jacket edge chips, mainly at corners. Second printing (jacket front panel states "Second Large Printing") of this popular tale in negro dialect, an interesting copy in that Little as signed it large and bold (adding "RHL" as well) on an inner flyleaf above a tipped-in newspaper photograph of himself. On the front flyleaf, seven of what we assume to be Little's cronies sign their nicknames. We identify writer Don Farran (1902-86), whose newsprint Lincoln poem "Prairie Dusks" is tipped to the front pastedown, and "Snowshoe Al," Albert J. Bromley of "Snowshoe Al's Bedtime Stories" fame. The others, unidentified but likely newspaper journalists, sign themselves "Oswald of Wesleyan," "The Blonde Flapper," "The Spinner of the Taffrail Log," "Duke Bokrok" and "An Unpreferred Brunette." I suspect this signing session may have involved the use of spirituous liquors. MONAGHAN 3041.
