A special copy, crisp and bright with a signed, dated presentation on the half title page by Barbara Hepworth, the provenance described in a laid in penned note written by Kay Gimpel, co-owner of the Gimpel Fils Gallery, addressed to the recipients on a gallery compliments slip in which she states she and Charles requested Barbara Hepworth sign a copy of the book and they are now sending it on, signed Kay. The American recipients, Samuel and Dorothy Rautbord acquired a significant collection of Modernist works including British artists, many through the Gimpel Fils Gallery. The Gallery held 9 exhibitions of Barbara Hepworth's works 1956-1977. The presentation is dated March 1968, shortly after issue of the book. CONDITION DETAIL: Presentation: Fine. Laid in Note: Fine. Pages: nearly as new, fresh and crisp, the only wear-1 sand grain size light spot at the top edge of p. 51. Boards: clean, bottom edge with sun fade and top corners gently bumped. Binding: true and excellent. Jacket: clean and fresh with a few instances of very light edgewear, spine with slight wear to one spot at the foot, top edge with a few tiny, clean closed vertical tears that can only be seen from the inside, the upper panel with a few rubs. PRESENTATION: 4 short lines in large, clear, cursive script done with a brown felt tip pen, signed in full and dated. NOTE: Gallery's heading and Mayfair address, 6 short lines written with a green felt tip pen, undated, ca. March 1968. FORMAT: Publisher's cornflower blue cloth boards in sewn binding with stamped gilt letters on the spine and gilt artist's holograph signature on the upper board with color pictorial book jacket with white & red letters reproducing on the upper panel the 1966 sculpture, "Four-Square (walk-through), repeated as illustration no. 172. SIZE: As issued, 21.4 x 15.4 cm or 8.43 x 6.06 inches. PAGINATION: Confirmed complete. 216 pages with chapter references, selected bibliography, list of illustrations, and index, text with 173 reproductions including family shots, the frontispiece portrait photograph of the artist in St. Ives, Cornwall (1964), contemporary portraits of the artist at work, and numerous reproductions of sculptures and preparatory drawings, including 18 color illustrations of works, one a double page photo of Barbara Hepworth's Trewyn sculpture garden with view of "Figure for Landscape". SUMMARY: Well acquainted with the artist, the author produced this excellent, cited overview-Freitag 4227 with the collaboration of Barbara Hepworth. This is the second monograph (first in 1958) by Hammacher on the artist and was slightly revised in 1998. IMAGES: by request.
