Bouchardat was the first to develop a clinically proven treatment for Type 2 Diabetes that effectively reduced glucose levels. His dietetic therapy included daily self-testing by patients of the glucose levels in their urine using the Trommer test, a regimen of physical exercise, and a low carbohydrate diet that unlike the recommended diet of fatty meats prescribed by the pioneering physician, John Rollo in, "An Account of Two Cases of the Diabetes Mellitus" (1798) was nutritionally balanced and palatable and sustainable. After 1871, based on his observations of the 1870 German siege of Paris, he advocated a low intake diet of the minimum calories required for sustenance. In 1875, he published his definitive text on the subject, "De La Glycosurie Ou Diabète Sucre", which included his observations on lesions in the pancreas.
