Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1938 A wonderful copy of an extremely collectable book, housed in it's very rare and unrestored original dustjacket. This is the 1st Edition, 1st Impression, 1st State, with the Bowing Hobbit on the title page. The maps are bound opposite to the order of the List of Illustrations, as per Hammond and Anderson. Chapter VII header is uncorrected and reads as 'Chapter VI' This book features the 4 color and 9 black and white illustrations by Tolkien, all of which are present and in extremely clean and bright condition. There are no names or writing in the book. The text block and maps are also very clean and bright, without any foxing or marks whatsoever. The text block is tight with no loose pages or any separation from the binding. The original cloth shows only the most minor shelf wear on the tips of the bottom edges, very clean and unmarked. The very rare 1st Dustjacket, is original and unrestored, with a few chips, tears and loss to the edges and splits to the folds, still Very Good and presents beautifully. A small amount of archival tape to the verso of the splits and tears to help preserve the dustjacket. I have provided a custom clamshell case, Quarter Bound in black leather with the Title, Author, Dwarve's Hat, and Publisher gilt stamped as per the spine of the original book, to protect and house this classic of modern fiction.
