[EARLY HAWAIIAN MISSION PRESS PRIMER]by [Hawaiian Imprint]:
[Oahu: Mission Press, 1823?].. [4]pp. Single, folded sheet. Light soiling, tanning; small chip to inner margin. A very good copy of an extraordinarily scarce item. An extremely scarce Hawaiian imprint - only the third item to come off the Mission Press at Oahu. The first page contains vowels and punctuation: "A E / a ; e / I ? O / i ' o". The letters U, K, L, M, N, P, and W are also printed - all quite common in the Hawaiian language - as well as numbers zero to nine and a few more punctuation marks. The earliest Hawaiian imprint- of which no copy survives - was printed in Honolulu on Jan. 7, 1822, and Forbes 546 relates the well- documented story of its printing. Only three pieces of printing survive from 1822; two editions of a spelling book (Judd 1 and 2, Forbes 534 and 535) and a unique broadside, Forbes 557. Judd lists the present piece as her third entry, and locates only three institutions with holdings. Not in Forbes. An extremely rare piece, and the earliest obtainable Hawaiian imprint.. JUDD 3.
