London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, 1890. Two volumes in six divisions uniformly bound in red cloth covered boards with decorative design and title in gilt to the top board of each. The special subscription edition. The first volumes of three divisions has 165 woodcuts and maps, including 35 separate plates. The second division(again three divisions) has 170 woodcuts and maps, including 30 separate plates. All divisions are very good with uniform sunning to the spines. Elsewhere, the boards have moderate wear and soiling. Two divisions have bumps to the bottom edges. The first plates of five of the six divisions (division IV being the exception) have been removed. Otherwise, the texts are complete with all illustrations, plates, and maps. Overall, a very good set.. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket, As Issued. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

Hardcovers, two-volume match set bound in dark green cloth, decorated on front with stamped outline of Africa and decorated in black and gilt. Volume 1 shows slightly more choose one than volume 2 and both books show scuffing to the cloth along with some spotting. Edges and corners also show bumps/wear. The internal bindings are good, no hinge issues. Dark brown end pages in front and rear are free of any personal bookplates, no library markings. The second front end page and title pages of both books contains the original owner signature. This is lightly written in pencil and can be erased if desired. The only other handwriting found in the book is on the second to the last end page, which has 1/2 page of notes, also written in pencil - though it is darker and more pronounced than the light signatures, so they may be difficult to…
