During that time, Mr. Iles came to know his zoo family very well, and the reader will, too. The stories he tells about them--some amusing, some sad, all fascinating--are guaranteed to delight and entertain young and old alike. Gerald Iles had his favorite "characters" among the animals, and the reader will be hard pressed to decide which are his own favorites among the many described so delightfully. There is Peggy Kitsum, the tame leopardess who often accompanied him on his walks through the zoo and had her own ideas about animals. There are Kliou and Maude, the tigons, rare offspring of a tiger and a lioness; Tony, a completely lovable hippo, whose son Nicholas did not, unfortunately, inherit his father's placid nature; Joey, the Chimpanzee who loved movies; Victoria, the baby giraffe who disproved a long-held belief that giraffes are mute by bellowing long and loud for her bottle; Kinky, the kinkajou who preferred a diet of grilled kidney, Danish blue cheese, and cherry brandy; and many, many more. Life in the zoo is life filled with incident--matings, birth, death, moments of danger and pathos, of humor and sadness. My HOME IN THE ZOO is one man's look at this life, told with intelligence, warmth, and great charm. .
