Description:
Weaver, Emily. : Paper and Scissors in the Schoolroom. Milton Bradbury. USA. 1893. Papers boards decorated title to front. Pp77, [4] Advert publishers books. Drawings throughout text illustrating templates for classroom use of paper folding. Two neat ownership inscriptions on front free end papers:- B. Burgoyne Chapman to his friend Gordon dated Aug 26 1915, Kulong [district in Shanghai], later inscription of "Rattenbury", which is probably that of H B Rattenbury, or a family member. Pages are a little age toned, some light damp staining affecting the edge of a few pages, in good clean order. Benjamin Burgoyne Chapman, (1886-1964) born in Australia, entered the Methodist Wesleyan ministry in 1913 and worked in China from 1913 - 1931. He returned in 1936 after travelling to India and Japan. Harold Burgoyne Rattenbury (1878-1961) published author and Methodist missionary in Burma and China in the 1930/ 40's. A book with an ownership story perhaps more interesting than that written by the author.

xvi+253 pages with pictorial title, maps, figures, drawings, photographs, bibliography and index. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6 1/2"0 bound in original publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering to spine and pictorial cover in original pictorial jacket. In this account of the naval aspect of Hernando Cortes' invasions of the Aztec Empire, C Harvey Gardiner has added another dimension to the drama of Spanish conquest of the New World and to Cortes himself as military strategist. The use of ships, in the climatic moment of the Spanish-Aztec clash, wich brought a bout the fall of Tenoctitlan and conseequently of all Mexico, though discussed briefly in former English-Language accounts of the struggle, has never before been detailed and brought into a perspective that reveals its true significance. Gardiner, on the basis of previously unexploited sixteenth-century source materials, has written an historical revision that is as colorful as it is authoritative. First edition limited to 100 copies.George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of…

xvi+469 pages with appendix and bibliography. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First editionFocusing on the fate of the natives under Spanish rule, the author traces in graphic detail the rupturing of Indian traditions and the fate that befell the Indian people. While demonstrating the excesses of the conquistadors and unscrupulous crown officials, he also emphasizes that Central America was the scene of the first attempt to apply the famous New Laws. Although that legislation was not fully implemented, the reformist judge Alonso Lopez de Cerrato made significant improvements in labor conditions, in the face of furious opposition from the Spanish settlers. Aside from it discussion of labor practices, this account deals with population figures and the extent of the slave trade, and corrects a number of errors in traditional sources. In addition, Spanish Indian policy, particularly at the local level, is examined…
