"The first campaign medal of the Great War - the 1914 Star - was struck in 1917. In October 1919, by command of the King, a bar bearing . the dates '5th Aug.-22nd Nov. 1914' was awarded to all holders of the medal who had been under fire - i.e., 'within range of enemy mobile artillery' - in France and Flanders between the qualifying dates. Fewer than 230,000 bars were awarded. The r. ecipients - and only they - were and are the Old Contemptibles. Their very special medal has come to be known, by hallowed tradition, as the 'Mons Star'; and this is their story...." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, 11 digit number writt. e n in ink on back of free rear endpaper. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, several tiny/small chips and tears along top edge, light rubbing. VG+/VG-.
