The Harry Potter series has been an unprecedented publishing phenomenon: whereas the first book had a first printing in the U.K. reported to be 500 copies, the seventh and last book in the series had a first printing reported at 16 million copies, in the U.S. alone. The American edition of the first book came in the wake of the success the novel had in England, and we have been told that there were 3500 copies of the advance reading copy done.
