Book summary

Although the tabloid-style sensationalism of the book's subtitle ("A Family's Victory Over the Flesh-Eating Bacteria") might turn-away fainthearted readers, the contents of this inspirational story should not. David Cowles's dramatic recovery from this deadly infection provides the context for this affecting account of one family's close brush with death, and how a supportive community of relatives, friends, colleagues, and well-wishers rallied around them. While appreciative of the expert medical and nursing care her received during the six surgical operations needed to save his life, the husband and wife authors of this book are convinced that the biggest factor was "the religious healing energy of many people from many religions praying for us." The extra-scientific dimensions of religious healing are, by definition, not limited to the realm of established medicine. For that, in the end, we must turn to the Cowles and others like them, for a first person account of their experiences in the realm between medicine and healing.

Media reviews

This is an inspirational story which tells of David Cowles' struggles with a rare flesh-eating bacteria which threatens to consume him. While faith is the final factor in recovery in this instance, there's plenty of background medical information given to introduce medical student readers to the symptoms of the disease.
