Book Description
London: John Murray (Albemarle Street), 1853. Complete 3 volume set, very good condition, half red morocco leather with gilt tooled 5 banded spine, binding tight, marbled boards, original enpapers, and large folding map of St. Helena (bound at end of vol. 1). Vol 1: xii, 495; Vol. II: iv, 490; Vol. III: vi, 529 (includes index). All 3 frontispieces (portrait of Napoleon, Longwood, House Built by British Government) present, at front of respective volumes, with original tissue guards. Very little browning at a few edges, a couple of marginal chips (rare). This is quite a nice set of Napoleonic history, written in an attempt to justify the treatment of Napoleon during his final years. The CD version of the DNB describes Forsyth as a "Man of letters". Six years after this publication, in 1859, he was appointed standing counsel to the Secretary of State for India. The DNB states that he was "one of the patriarchs of the Athenaeum Club, being elected in 1844." The large, folding b&w topographical map at the rear of vol. I is in excellent condition, and shows numerous sites of interest, including the Grave of Napoleon. The image mesures 18x25 inches, was published by the Hydrographic Office of the Admiralty, is dated 1816 and engraved by J & C Walker. There is a 3 inch left marginal tear (at site of book attachment) with a verso tape repair; no image is lost. There is a list of illustrations on vi, vol. 3, along with errata. . First Edition.
