Leiden (A Leide): Jean & Herman Verbeek, 1740. Vellum spine with title in contemporary script, decorative cloth boards (contemporary?), with all 29 engraved plates (some folding) on laid paper. Pages 131-2 were missing, and are supplied in xerox (text pages only; plates all of the originals). This is the first edition, in very nice condition (slight marginal dampstains to a few text pages). Nice paper; dedication pages to Charles Bentinck present. Two parts in 1 volume, totalling 204 pages, with 8 pages introduction + table of contents. Vauban (1633-1707) was one of the great military engineers of all time, and Louis XIV chief military engineer.. He became Marshal of France in 1703, and his works have been extensively studied (see Duffy's "The Fortress in the Age of Vauban..1660-1789", vol. II of Siege Warfare series). His writings influenced the military decisions of American notables such as George Washington and Robert E. Lee.. First Edition. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
