Baltimore, Maryland: F. Lucas, 1829. Pages not numbered, indexed with notes, glossary and explanation of botanical terms. Charming text that explains the language of flowers through definition and quotations. Facing page of text is blank sheet in yellow, pink or blue where color plates were to be attached (plates not present). Green and red binding with gilt decoration and lettering on spine, gilt pages edges, matching gray-green endpapers. Cover scuffed and edge worn, corners bumped, some gilt loss to cover and page edges. Interior pages very lightly tanned with a few stains and pencil notations, front free endpaper detached with blank sheet, first title page missing.. Not Stated. Half-Leather. Fair/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
jacket : Sometimes used as another term for dust jacket, a protective and often decorative wrapper, usually made of paper which wraps around the binding of a book
spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.
front free endpaper : The portion of the endpaper which is left loose after binding. The first loose page upon opening a book. It may be plain or decorative.
gilt : Decorative patterns imbedded into the affected portion of a book. Often appears on the boards or the spine, and may be very simple, to elegant, to ludicrous.
title page : A page where the title of the book, the author's name and publication information usually appear.
plates : Full page illustrations or photographs. Plates are printed separately from the text of the book, and bound in at production. I.e., they are not sewn as parts of gatherings.
4to : Or quarto. A term used generally to describe the approximate size of a book, a book that is about 10" to 12" tall and roughly squarish in shape. The term is based on the size of paper traditionally used by book printers which has been folded and cut into 16 pages.
bumped : Indicates that the affected part of the book has been impacted in such a way so as to cause a flattening, indention, or light bending.
endpapers : The first and last two pages (verso and recto) from the front and back of a book.
