Book description: London,, 1907. . Dsbd. No outside wrappers. VG. 8vo. Publ. Nov. 1907. Originally publ. in 1905. On careless spending of public wealth, the power of wealth, the weakness of poverty, the economy of rising rates, unearned incomes, etc. Single tract published by the Fabian Society. which was a British socialist organization founded in 1884 which was an outgrowth of the Fellowship of the New Life (ounded in 1883 under the influence of Thomas Davidson. In 1884 the first founders Frank Podmore and Edward Pease were quickly joined by George Bernard Shaw and Sydney Webb. The group gained wide influence by publication of the Fabian Essays and individual tracts such as this. Fabians opposed Marxist & anarchist violent revolution theories and believed social reforms and socialist permeations of existing political institutions would bring about the natural development of socialism. After Beatrice Potter (later Beatrice Webb) joined the group they turned much attention to the issues of labor & unionism. Their Labour Committee evolved into the Labour Party which adopted the main tenants of the Fabians. The most recognized & influential members of the Fabians were playwright George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950), Sydney Webb (1859-1947) and Beatrice Potter Webb (1858-1943). They took an early interest in social problems & worked with Charles Booth in surveying the poor of London. While Shaw was writing music & drama criticism & publishing critical essays & important plays he was also writing political, social, & economic tracts for the Fabian Society. The Webbs & Shaw together built up the Fabian Society, the British Labour Party, the London School of Economics, and the New Statesman. Most of the political and social reforms of their long lives were due to their research & political acumen. Many other important contributors to the Fabian Tract publishing program existed who were skilled in psychology, economics, political science, etc.
