Synopsis of speech is have pride in your country, don't listen to those in Europe speak disparingly of America, don't forget Pilgrim ancestors, be proud of the Constitution, U.S. liberty, & U.S. institutions, guard against fanaticism in every form, etc. This speech given at 55th July 4 celebration which was followed by other festivities, speeches, & a parade. 8pp. Appendix lists members of meeting of Young Men Of Salem (a club) who invited the speaker, order of parade procession, 3/4 page list of board of Salem Firewards, with list of 8 Fire Engine Companies & their directors. The fire department for this parade is making its first public exhibition & is displaying its fire engines, horse carts, & sail carts in "the most perfect order" & "tastefully decorated". The number of firemen present is almost 400. There is mention of one small fire engine imported from England in 1748, the oldest in the city. Last 5pp. have anthems, orations, a prayer, mention of parade by Danvers Light Infantry & a collection made by members of Fire Department.
