Complimentary book w/ reminiscences of many fellow officers on Philip's career since the 1860's with much from his journals aboard ships. With Sept. 1, 1900 message from President McKinley on Philip's service during Spanish-American War & his untimely death. John Woodward Philip (1840-1900) was an officer in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War & Spanish-American War. He graduated from Naval Academy June 1, 1861 & during the Civil War served aboard the Santee, Marion ans Sonoma ships until Sept. 1862 when he was ordered to the Chippewa, attached to the South Atlantic Blocking Squadron. While serving on the Chippewa he was wounded during operations against Charleston, South Carolina, July 1863. During the Spanish-American War he commanded the Marblehead & led the attack & silenced the fort on Cayo del Toro, Guantanomo Bay, June 15, 1898 & in command of the Texas on July 3 he participated in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba, in which the Spanish fleet was destroyed off Santiago de Cuba. He was advanced five numbers in grade Aug. 10, 1898 for eminent and conspicuous service in battle. From Sept. 3 until Dec. 28, 1898 he served as Commander 2nd Squadron, North Atlantic Fleet. Commencing January 14, 1899 he was in command of the Navy Yard and Naval Station, N.Y. & promoted to Rear Admiral March 3, 1899. He died suddenly June 30, 1899. W/ 1 pg. of photocopied biogr. material inserted into book.
