London,, 1838. 1st edition. Rmvd. from a bd. vol., modern wrprs. . A fine beautiful copy. . 8vo. After a Preface, Extracts from Report made to Commons by Quakers on condition of Canadian Indians, Caribbean & South American Indians, Hottentots, Caffres, aborigines of New Holland, New Zealand, Pacific Islands. Extremely detailed. Specifically discusses in the Preface the minutes of the 1837 General Committee "having had under its serious consideration the circumstances of the Aborigines of the British Colonial Posssessions, particularly the Indians in Upper Canada..." Discusses a great body of evidence collected which is "deplorable and awful". Whenever circumstances have permitted Englishmen to come into contact with uncivilized Aborigines in any parts of the globe they have exerted an influence to powerfully reduce their numbers and degrade them morally & physically leading to absolute extinction in some cases. Discussion of the African slave trade, the sufferings of uncivilized races which the Christian world has oppressed, etc. incl. diminuation of their numbers, introduction to the tribes of loathsome and fatal diseases, also famine & conquest. Friends [Ie. Quakers] are reminded that although this applies to the whole class of Aborigines which demand their sympathy, "the Aborigines of North America possess a claim of a strong and peculiar character upon our religious Society." With discussions of Quaker involvement w/ North American Indians & treaties with them by William Penn & others. Quaker efforts will immediately help the Canadian Indians and also American Quakers can help American Indians at the urging of British Quakers. Two members of the General Committee inteviewed the Sec, of State for the Colonial department in reference to the treatment of Indians within Upper Canada and on the objectionable project of Gov. Head for removing them from their valuable settlements and reservations to the small rocky islands of Lake Huron and other districts further northwest ( w/ extensive details). The Select Committe's 60pp.extract of the report, itself, is printed. It discusses after reviewing Acts of Parliament & European contact w/ Aborigines in general, the situation of English colonies & natives in Newfoundland, North American Indians (nearly 3pp.), English South American colonies & natives (British Guiana, the Caribs of the West Indies, New Holland (nearly 3pp.), Van Dieman's Land, Islands In the Pacific, South Africa (about 18pp.) ( w/ reference to Hottentots, Caffres, Bushmen & others), the philosophy of fair dealing w/ Aborigines, the bad influence of rum & liquors on the Aborigines, religious work w/ Indians in Upper Canada (5pp.) (Chippeways, Mohawks, various other tribes), also a report from a missionary among the Indians of the South Seas & New Zealand (6pp.), 9pp. more on South Africa, and a Conclusion.
