Book desription: Seattle, , 1934. 2nd edition. . Orig. colored red & white heavy wrprs. w/ Japanese rising sun flag & 25 cents price. A very nice copy. VG. 8vo. The full text of the historically notorious document or manifesto known as the "Tanaka Memorial", supposedly written by Japanese Prime Minister Tanaka who was Prime Minister 1927-29 & presented to the Emperor & others in 1927 calling for Japanese conquest of Manchuria & Mongolia in China as a prelude to a general Japanese invasion of Asia & war plans for their Pacific War & confrontation with the United States (World War II). This document supposedly was originally circulated in 1927 in Chinese, purporting to be a rough translation of a document presented to the Emperor of Japan by Tanaka outlining Japanese policy in Manchuria & other things. Extremely detailed on then-status of Japanese needs, & aims, weakness of Chinese detailed in many areas, the probable ease in invading & annexing Manchuria, etc. Tanaka's report was supposedly a secret report presented in a 1927 special conference on Japan's plans for colonization of the Far East and development of a "new continental empire." If authentic, reveals much of the program that the Japanese militarists actually fully followed, anticipating the clash with the United States & is considered the Japanese "Mein Kampf." For those that used this piece in propaganda efforts (particularly left wing & communists (notably Trotsky) , a scary future prediction of Japanese aggressive imperialistic war, and, of course, an amazingly early prediction of the Japanese aggressive clash with the U.S. This pamphlet also available as a 1938 "Far Eastern Magazine" reprint & especially most available as a notable 1942 ("I told you so") printing by leftist International Publishers & an English 1943 edition. The 1942 edition is mistakenly thought by many to be the first edition. By then, of course, after Pearl Harbor, Japan's aims were well known to the U.S. THIS particular 1934 copy is an EXTREMELY EARLY PRINTING of the Tanaka document years before Japan's bombing of Pearl Harbor, & therefore an unusually early foreshadowing of Japanese war with the U.S. By 1934 Japan was already in Manchuria which it re-named the puppet state, "Manchukuo." Pamphlet with a foreward by Upton Close. Of note, Japan claimed this Tanaka document was a forgery & because it was especially useful in leftist attacks on Japanese policy, the possibility exists that it was invented. Authenticity needs more research. But whether it is real or not, it was certainly among the earliest fore-warnings of a Japanese aggressive confrontation with the U.S., years before it actually happened. Very rare.
