Single paragraph transmittals by President Pierce & Secretary of War Jefferson Davis, then 80 separate letters & pieces of correspondence betrween Dec. 26, 1853 and Dec. 13, 1854. Many addressed to Gen. James Wool at Benicia, California, also letters to Gen. Winfield Scott, etc. Correspondence relates to California, Oregon, & Washington state incl. mvmt. of troops, the issue of staff officers going to California, establishment of military posts in the interior relating to depradations of the Indians, many other references to Indians and restraining Indians, the need for personal exploration in lands of Indian tribes & bands, numerous tribes occupying the Territory of Utah & the regions bordering upon California & Oregon not in the department of the Pacific. The Indians there are "roving predatory bands." Mention of the need to protect Mexico from Indian incursions as required by the treaty of Guadallupe Hidalgo ending the Mexican War, a unit of 250 soldiers has been outfitted & sent to Encidada to sustain soldiers there, an Indian post established in southern California near Tejon Pass, also posts should be opened in Oregon, especially Scott's Valley which would address the Klamath Indians and knowledge that the Indians of Washington Terr. are roaming and do not cultivate the soil but fish & hunt in one place and seek berries & roots in another. Plus documents discuss defense of the sea coast from San Diego to Puget Sound, naval mnmts. between San Diego & other points, lists of arms & ammunition, many forts named, many military figures named, skirmishes & battles with California Indians detailed, situation in Oregon & Washington State, paticularly dealing with Indians, cost of keeping carriages, horses, & men in San Francisco (high cost of 1st class rooms because of gold rush) . Suites of rooms in the Brannan Building in San Framcisco range from seventy five dollars on the 4th floor to one hundred fifty dollars on the 2nd floor per month. Also very much on contacts with Mexican consul & Mexican government, also the ship "Challenge" in the Pacific, situation of foreigners in California, the gold rush, right of way to build a military plank road from San Francisco to the ocean passing through the Presidio & Fort Point, much more in numerous addtl. letters. Very rare.
