This v. rare official State publication of Theodore Roosevelt's papers his first year as Governor begins with Roosevelt's annual message delivered to the legislature on January 2, 1899. The speech deals with taxation, canals, commerce, the National Guard, state railroads, forests, etc. Volume includes all of Roosevelt's 1899 messages, appointments, proclamations, addresses, political letters, vetoes, commutations, pardons, etc. With references to the the Spanish American War ("We cannot avoid the responsibilities that confront us in Hawaii, Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines...") , also a refusal to commute the death sentence of Martha Place, a woman murderer sentenced to die at Sing Sing, also messages re; pollution of Saratoga Lake, veto of a bill relating to sweat shops, certification of the necessity for rapid transit railways in cities over one million inhabitants (especially for NYC), message relating to appropriations to celebrate the return of Admiral Dewey, letter on proposed Hudson River Bridge at Troy, message concerning bridge over Niagara River to secure power for city of Buffalo, veto of a bill for relief of certain police & firemen, veto of an Act relating to pharmacists & druggists regulation to prevent accidents & mistakes in compounding prescriptions, veto of a bill relating to adulteration of beer, memorandum approving findings of court of inquiry re: cases of officers of 71st Regiment who fought in Spanish American War at San Juan (like Roosevelt himself), veto of Assembly Bill regulating sale of theater tickets, Proclamation Appointing A Day Of Thanksgiving, Proclamation Announcing The Death Of Vice President Hobart (ironically & unbeknownst to him at the time, TR would take his place on the ticket in 1900), many more vetoes, proclamations, messages, letters, & orders on various subjects.
