King Philip III (1578-1621) was King of Spain and King of Portugal (Philip II) from 1598 until; his death. He inherited essentially a bankrupt nation with a disasterous economy when he suceeded his father Philip II in 1598. Philip II had drained Spain's resources w/ her wealth based on the silver mines of Latin America. Her position in the Americas was being threatened by other European states. The independence movement in Peru & Mexico contributed to the decline in silver revenues which dropped from 2 million ducats in 1598 to 800, 000 in 1618. The court of Madrid occas. pursued an aggressive foreign policy which depended on how much silver Philip had to spend. Spain entered the 30 Years' War in the 1618. Spain's internal economy was weak w/ little industry & a backward agriculture and large estates worked by peasants ruined by excessive taxatuion. Spain's trade deficit was large. This document typical of the economic weakness of Spain internally diverting the King's attention with the town of Canical requiring monetary help. A very attractive document w/ many dark MS. lines, & a large expansive royal signature. Sold with 6pp. photocopied biography of Philip III & 3pp. on economic condition of Spain during his reign.
