The expedition began in August, 1838, its purpose & actual accomplishements (to survey, etc. various, rivers, sounds, bays, harbors, islands, inlets, incl. the northwest coast of America incl. Oregon & California, the rivers Sacramento & Columbia, Puget Sound, the Pacific Island groups incl. Fiji Islands, Polynesia, also a scientific survey of the Andes, Amazon River. The expedition had not yet begun when this pamphlet was published. The "progress made" was in the "arrangements for this expedition" that is, the discussing & stating of the objectives of the expedition, discussion of confidence in Captain Jones, who was to command the expedition, particular officers selected to report to him, the solicitation from several learned & philosophical societies as to what information might be deemed important to ascertain by the expedition, the appointment of the scientific corps for the expedition, discussion of the particular ships to be used & expenses, 200 men have been secured for the expedition, a table of the men by grade & task, some scienific & nautical instruments to be taken & their superiority for use by the expedition, a full list of instruments, books & publications to be carried by the expedition, a list of officers by ship attached to the expedition.
