First edition. 8vo., [10], 228 pp. including 3 lithographed plates (Nikkanochee, Prince of Econchatti - frontispiece, Oceola the Celebrated Chief of the Seminole and Oceola's Mode of Signing the Treaty. Appendices include the text of the 1824 Treaty of Moultrie Creek. Original green embossed cloth, spine stamped in gilt. Toned throughout, title with lower corner creased, hinges repaired, rebacked preserving original spine, spine slightly darkened, shelfwear. Page 7 has a 3-1/2 inch open tear from bottom of up up through some type. There is also on page 155 a 5/8 inch tear on the right border not going in to or affecting type. Very occasional neat pencil notes. Overall, condition is still very good. Provenance: Bruce McKinney (Rare Book Hub). Bruce purchased from Maggs Bros., 1994 and sold at Bonhams in 2010. Nikkanochee, nephew of the Seminole chief Oceola, was captured by the U.S. troops and adopted by Welch. Welch is sympathetic to the native plight: he conveys the heroic nature of Chief Oceola and humanizes the tribe with details of their customs and lifestyle. Full title: A narrative of the early days and remembrances of Oceola Nikkanochee, prince of Econchatti, a young Seminole Indian : son of Econchatti-Mico, king of the Red hills, in Florida ; with a brief history of his nation, and his renowned uncle, Oceola, and his parents and amusing tales, illustrative of Indian life in Florida.
