Chapman. 10 x 13 1/2 inches. 844 (OT) + 128 (Apocrypha) + [8] (family register and NT frontispiece] + 256 (NT) + 4 + 8 + 14 + 34 pages. With frontispiece and illuminated title to each testament. Contains 1600 engravings by J.A. Adams, more than 1400 of which are from original designs by J.G. Chapman. A very minimal amount of light foxing and endpapers slightly discolored (offsetting from the glue or boards and/or foxing). The rfeps and final leaf of the concordance have a small round (possibly ink) stain (one rfep has two such stains). Small light dampstain to the lower outside margin of the rfeps and the last four leaves of the concordance. A small marginal smudge to the frontispiece, and the protective tissue (which is present) has a small (less than one inch) closed tear at the top, and the tissue (though not the pages themselves) is foxed. The initial page of the Apocrypha (and opposing final page of the Old Testament) has a small ink smudge. Family register partially filled out neatly in ink with records (1835-1965) of Lannon and Waterbury families. All page edges gilt. Gilt edges are very bright with a few scuffs. Bound in elaborately gilt tooled black leather with name of John W. and Lucy Waterbury and gilt depiction of Grace Church, New York and horse drawn carriages on front cover and bible scenes on rear cover. Spine with six compartments. One with title (Holy Bible) and the other five with elaborate gilt decoration. Hinges professionally repaired with Japanese tissue. Corners very lightly worn. Hills 1161. A finely bound illuminated American Bible. Highly illustrated and extraordinarily well preserved. Originally issued in 54 numbers at 25 cents each. J.A. Adams, the engraver, is credited with having taken the first electrotype in America from a woodcut, and many in this Bible are so done. Artists were engaged for more than six years in the preparation of the designs and engravings included in this Bible, at a cost of over $20,000. "[T]his Harper publication was a remarkable production for its time and place, and retains its importance in the annals of American boook-making. W.J. Linton, noted wood-engraver and author, knew 'no other book like this, so good, so perfect in all it undertakes.' The illustrations are like picturings of history, as are so many of the old European Biblical paintings and illustrations." Hills 1161.
