Published with th All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, which managed The Championships jointly with The Lawn Tennis Association, this Annual not only recalls the moments when titles were won or lost, but also the many exciting deeds and personalities that made it such a memorable fortnight. From the stunning defeat of top seeded Martina Hingis in the first round of the ladies singles by 16-year old Jelena Dokic, to a record-breaking sixth men's singles title for Pete Sampras, who produced one of the most awesome grass-court displays of all time, the only breaks in the excitement came when it rained. No play was possible in the second Tuesday and only limited action on the second Thursday. This created a backlog of 150 matches, but all were completed on time, even tough it meant that the ladies' and men's singles finals, as well as the three main doubles and supporting matches, were all staged on the final Sunday. Joy, disappointment, skill, courage and nostalgia are all honoured here. So, too, are the sentimental final appearance of Boris Becker, still capable of destroying youthful dreams, the sudden re-emergence of former champion Andre Agassi with a thrusting challenge that carried him into the final; and Steffi Graf's announcement, immediately after losing to a brilliant performance by Lindsay Davenport in the ladies' singles final, that it was her last Wimbledon as a player. An extra 728 seats on Centre Court contributed to all-time record crowds of 457,069 daily record attendances being set on all but four of the 13 days. However, it is the magic of Wimbledon itself, with 19 perfectly manicured courts providing the stage for the world's finest players that makes it so special. For the second year in succession, Tim Henman kept the British flag flying magnificently through to the semi-finals before once more bowing to the master, Pete Sampras, whose triumph enabled him to draw level with Roy Emerson as the winner of a record 12 Grand Slam singles titles. In addition, there was the inspiring emergence of Dokic, Alexandra Stevenson and Mirjana Lucic to add to such already established teenage heroines as Anna Kournikova and Venus Williams. Written by John Parsons, lawn tennis correspondent for "The Daily Telegraph, superbly illustrated by the photographs of Clive Brunskill, Gary M. Prior and Alex Livesey of Allsport and with the support of Cannon, Official Camera to the Championships, Wimbledon, this Annual again provides a feast of memories of the world's best-loved tennis tournament. .
