[Civil War] Bill of Lading. [New York?]: [Cromwell's New-York & New Orleans Steamship Line] November 21, 1863. One sheet 16.5 x 29 cm partly printed document with manuscript inserts. Very good.
The Union forces in May 1863 captured the city of New Orleans. By this document $10,000 of United States Treasury Notes are being sent to the City, in all likelihood to purchase cotton or other goods from the captured port. See for example, the New York Times for September 1863 describing a shipment from New Orleans of cotton and accompanied by U.S. Treasury notes, since the Confederate Currency would no longer be valid, people would need to finance purchase and sales with U.S. financial instruments. Interestingly, in February 1863 Congress rejected a provision in the banking bill that would have made interest-bearing Treasury notes legal tender. An interesting look at the practical issues in carrying on commerce during the Civil War.

At the time snowboarding was a young sport which was to have a tremendous influence on the ski industry and therefore the state of Vermont. The front cover shows Louis Fournier of Quebec competing at the 1982 Snow Surfing Championships held during February in Woodstock VT. Inside are 2 articles, the first by Majorie Ryerson, reports on the Championship organized by Paul Graves, credited with helping to originate the sport. The second, by Morgan Heusller, concerns Jake Burton Carpenter's shop, then in its 5th year of operation. Photos accompanying both articles and the cover are by Richard Howard. Plenty of other great winter related articles and photos, including the Great Benson Fishing Derby, which originated down the road from The Book Shed. Every effort is made to ship all books and other items within 24 hours. Clean recycled packing material will be used when possible.… Read More
