A retake please!; Night Mail to Western Approachesby Jackson, Pat
Book desription: Liverpool University Pr., 1999. Hardbound. New Book. Hardbound. In this memoir, Jackson notes that he does not want to share with his readers a list of his "failures and wrongdoings" but rather hopes to describe his "struggle to find [his] little niche in the world." He clearly found his niche in film-making, where he achieved his greatest work: writing, directing, casting and editing the British classic Western Approaches, a documentary about the Battle of the Atlantic. Jackson also describes his travails in Hollywood, particularly with film mogul L.B. Mayer, founder of Metro Goldwyn Mayer, but throughout the book he emphasizes his craft, and not the obstacles to it. Distributed by ISBS. (©1999 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR)
