New York: Simon & Shuster, 1932. Van Loon's Geography: The Story of the World We Live In written and illustrated by Hendrick Willem van Loon. 1932, seventh printing. Hardcover. Dust jacket. 525 pages including index. Black and white and color illustrations. Dust jacket has some minor chipping on bottom, top of spine and has a quarter inch tear on front cover and two tears at bottom of back cover. Dust jacket also has light soiling. Book cover is in great condition with cover illustration in full color and excellent condition. Page preceeding title page has a one inch tear at top. Pages 72 and 73 have some slight age darkening, other pages appear crisp and clean. Book plate of owner on inside front cover. Dusty top and light soil to bottom. From dust jacket: "It is in relation to us as human beings that Hendrick Van Loon now explores the cracked and wrinkled face of old Mother Earth. The discovery of a trade-route, the slant of a mountain-range, the curve of a river-valley: we all know vaguely that these have enormous power to influence our lives and fortunes. Now, for the first time, the fascinating story of these things and what they mean to us is set down, in text and pictures, for the general reader. Through the analogy of half a dozen clean handkerchiefs, Hendrik Van Loon explains what is happening to the surface of the earth. A plate of soup helps us to understand air-currents. Under our eyes the course of the Gulf Stream turns into an entralling story, and the central Spanish plateau is reconstructed in imagination by means of a soup-plate, two saucers and a spoon. This book contains no statistics about the import and export of raw cotton and canned kangaroo tails. It is packed full of information, but only as that information has something to do with us, as inhabitants of that "small, dark object - entirely surrounded by space" which is our home." Ephemera: "...Reprinted from the Book of the Month Club News..." from 1932. Four page mini Flyer on Van Loon's Geography. Includes black and white photograph of the author. This four-page review is written by Henry Seidel Canby. In very good condition with a slight fold or bend along part of the bottom. Color illustrated paste down on front cover. Also contains emphemera original Book of the Month Club insert. Thanks for shopping with us! 100% of your purchase benefits charity and supports literacy and lifelong learning. . Cloth. Good/Good.
