Small 8 v o. 384 pp. First Edition in English under this title of Turgenev's novel, a translation of DVORIANSKOE GNEZDO (1859). Privately Printed by the translator, Frantz Davidovitch Davis, whose English translation has imbued Turgenev's richly written pro se with a militant 'Socialist' slant making this particular rendition all the more spiteful in lieu of Turgenev's vehement anti-Socialist beliefs that led him to leave Russia, believing that the salvation of his country would come by turning to the civilization of the Western World. 8vo. 384 pp. Original bevel edge grey cloth covered boards showing light use with some sunning to the printed paper spine label; w/o publisher's spine imprint; light wear to the heel & crown of the spine. Previous owner's neat signature on ffe.dated 1914 A very good copy of an historically important edition of this Turgenev novel especially in the light of the impending Russian political upheavel of 1917.
