Book desription: Paris,: J. Hetzel,. Good. 1865. Soft Cover. iii,115 pages, beige wrappers, 2nd edition. The back-strip is a little frayed but complete. The covers show a little shelf wear and the text shows evidence of having been read a few times. But all in all, a nice copy of a very rare and important piece. The author, one of the most colorful men of his day, was a pioneer balloonist. He constructed the huge balloon Le Geant in 1864. This pamphlet, however, expresses his advocacy for a heavier-than-air machine - much to the chagrin of his fellow balloonists. He states his views most forcefully and with a wry humor. Gamble #2199, Liebmann-Wahl #1369, Marie P.32, Tissandier p.30, ACF p.39, Brockett #8974. From the Oxford Encyclopedia 'Nadar (pseudonym of Gaspard Felix Tournachon) (1820 - 1910) French photographer. Nadar was a Parisian journalist and caricaturist before he took up photography in 1853 in partnership with his brother Adrien. In 1860 he opened his own studio. In 1874 he lent this studio to the Impressionists for their first exhibition. Always eager to experiment Nadar took the first aerial photographs (from a balloon) photographed in the sewers and catacombs of Paris and as early as 1860 equipped his studio with electric light.' .
