Naturalist Hubbell (Broadsides from Other Orders: A Book of Bugs, LJ 3/1/93) investigates the little-known world of invertebrates: camel crickets, horseshoe crabs, spiders, millipedes, bees, fireflies, pill bugs, sponges, corals, earthworms, sea urchins, and Aphrodite, the sea mouse. Hubbell interviews the experts on each species, and, combining their knowledge with her own reading and study, presents the biology and behavior of these animals in interesting, accessible, and well-documented essays. (A bibliography follows each chapter.) Hubbell also uses these animals' lives and histories to explore the larger issues of diversity, evolution, taxonomy, and conservation of species.
