Book summary

A man is discovered dead in the woods. He is the abusive husband of Jessie Hatch, who had just been persuaded to leave him by Dr. Rhea Vann, the operator of the Cherokee Nation clinic. Jessie's brother, Henderson Sixkiller, has broken out of jail to save her. Everyone suspects Henderson of the murder of Jessie's husband.. Meanwhile the town is spooked by reported sightings of the Fire Carrier, an evil spirit of Cherokee lore.
