Twain was a humorist, but this picture of Mississippi life is profoundly moral and still incredibly influential. This tale of a boy's picaresque raft journey down river conveyed the voice and experience of the American frontier as no other work had done before. Beneath Huck's exploits, however, are more serious undercurrents of slavery and adult control, which threaten his deep and enduring friendship with the runaway slave Jim.. Blanck 3415. Listed in The Observer's All-Time 100 Best Novels [2003]. BMC No261, p90-93.
