Chicago: H.J. Smith, 1892. Hardcover. Very Good. Chicago: H.J. Smith, 1892. Hardcover. Very Good. An amazing attempt to present all of America's history and that of Mexico and Peru in one volume of 857 pages with color art and line drawings plus maps. The key was in selecting Davenport, who was a Master of the Art of Critical Condensation. Rush consulted Bancroft,Fiske and Blaine for the 100 page section on US History. This is one of the few attempts ever to key America' settlement and growth to Mexico and the settlement of South America. Most historians could not envision such a task and never undertook it. Nearly 600 Illustrations from the best Artists portraying every scene of the major events of history, many in full page color. One plate is missing; all maps and all illustrations are here. The BOOK is in strong binding, in original boards but with new spine laid down at our in-house Bindery on Cape Cod. The burden of such a heavy book is the toll on the boards and spine. We have restored the boards and straightened and reglued the spine and added new spine board, for the ages.

xvi+469 pages with appendix and bibliography. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First editionFocusing on the fate of the natives under Spanish rule, the author traces in graphic detail the rupturing of Indian traditions and the fate that befell the Indian people. While demonstrating the excesses of the conquistadors and unscrupulous crown officials, he also emphasizes that Central America was the scene of the first attempt to apply the famous New Laws. Although that legislation was not fully implemented, the reformist judge Alonso Lopez de Cerrato made significant improvements in labor conditions, in the face of furious opposition from the Spanish settlers. Aside from it discussion of labor practices, this account deals with population figures and the extent of the slave trade, and corrects a number of errors in traditional sources. In addition, Spanish Indian policy, particularly at the local level, is examined… Read More
