Volume I which covers Prehistory, Ancient World & Middle Ages has 597 illustrations, including 71 plates in full color and 20 with gold, plus 22 maps and 467 pp with index. Volume II which covers the Renaissance, Baroque and the Modern World has 674 illustrations including 86 plates in full color and 8 with gold, plus 12 maps and 527 pp with index. There are a total of 6 time linex that relate important historical and cultural events to the arts of their period, with a glossary & bibliography in each volume. "Its author...evokes the place and time in which each great civilization flourished, and shows how individual works of art express it." Pages are very crisp, clean & tight.
