This booklet contains the first printed appearance of Churchill's speech of 9 October 1948 at the 69th Annual Conservative Party Conference. Three years earlier, Churchill's Conservatives had been soundly defeated in the General Election at the end of the war. Churchill would head opposition to the Labour Government until the General Election of 1951, which returned the Conservatives to majority and Churchill to the office of Prime Minister. At the 69th Annual Conservative Party Conference, Churchill delivered a 65-minute address to a crowd of about 2,500 in the Pier Pavilion, Llandudno, Wales. This address appears at pp.149-56 of this 160-page "Verbatim Report of the Proceedings together with the Text of Mr. Churchill's Speech". The booklet measures 9.75 inches x 6 inches and is bound in blue card wraps. Condition is very good+. The blue card binding is unfaded and square, with sharp corners and an uncreased spine. The covers show only trivial wear at extremities and an "AREA EDUCATION OFFICES" ink stamp at the top right front cover. The contents are clean and bright with no spotting and no previous ownership marks. The only flaw of note is that the glue that holds the wrapper to the spine is starting to fail, but the covers are still fully intact and attached to the text block and this deficiency is easily repaired. The binding is protected with a removable, clear mylar cover. The speech herein was later printed in Europe Unite at pp.409-24 under the title "Conservative Mass Meeting" and later still in Winston S. Churchill: His Complete Speeches, Vol. VII, pp.7707-17 under the title "Perils at Home and Abroad". Bibliographic reference: Cohen D134, Woods D(b)70/I.

Only when they realize fully the decline and descent... into which they have fallen, and in part, been thrust, since our glorious victory, will those forces arise in the land in which redemption and recovery can be found." Less than two years earlier, Churchill's Conservatives had been soundly defeated in the General Election at the end of the war. Description:
Melbourne, Victoria Australia: The Henry George Foundation, 1941. Pamphlet. This pamphlet is a wartime reprint of extracts from two Churchill speeches delivered in the House of Commons on 4 May 1909 and at King's Theatre, Edinburgh, 17 July 1909. The publisher's introductory note states: "In now publishing these extracts it is hoped that Mr. Churchill's eloquent and emphatic criticism of the present Land System will not be lost sight of in the post-war reconstruction for a New Social Order of which so much is being heard." There were two impressions - a first of 5,000 in January 1941 followed by this second printing of 10,000 in June 1941. Both, of course, are now scarce, particularly in this condition. The pamphlet measures 7.125 inches tall x 4.75 inches wide. It is sixteen pages in length with stapled paper wraps, the front cover bearing a head and shoulders image of Churchill. This is a crisp, fresh, truly fine copy. The only flaw noted is that the gray-green paper wrappers are a bit toned… Read More

Description:
This book is in fairly good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, edges, and spine of the cover boards, as well as spots on the outside back cover board. There is minimal bumping and fraying on the cover boards. The pages are yellowing and tanning, with some vertical fraying and warping, but the pages are clear of markings. A few of the pages are dog-eared and edges torn. "The Forsyte Saga was the title originally destined for that part of it which is called 'The Man of Propery; and to adopt it for the collected chronicles of the Forsyte family has indulged the Forsytean tenacity that is in all of us. The word Saga might be objected to on the ground that it connotes the heroic and that there is little of heroism in these pages. But it is used with a suitable irony; and, after all, this long tale, though it may deal with folk in frock coats, furbelows, and a gilt-edged period, is not devoid of the essential heat of conflict. Discounting for the gigantic stature and blood-thirstiness of… Read More
