Very minor rubbing to hinges and a small bump to the lower front board at the outer corner, but overall a beautiful clean copy of this classic. Among the very best of Rackham's work.

Later editions were reduced in size to the same dimensions as Through the Looking Glass). Both volumes are beautifully Illustrated throughout, with forty-two and fifty line engravings respectively, by John Tenniel . Bright, clean copies, finely bound, by Bayntun-Riviere of Bath, in recent full deep red morocco bindings. Double gilt ruled borders on boards with circular gilt illustrations of Alice carrying the Pig, The Cheshire Cat, & both the Red and White Queens, reproducing the decorations on the original boards. Spines with raised bands, each with gilt piping. The compartments double ruled and lettered in gilt. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Turn-ins with double gilt rules and decorative corner pieces. Original gilt decorated publishers red cloth boards bound in at the end of each volume. Alice also has one of the original plain blue endpapers bound in. Both books are the first published London editions. Alice is the earliest state with the inverted 'S' at the bottom of the contents page and the light blue endpapers rather than the much more common dark green. A very good attractive pair of First Editions of these classic children's books. Housed in a purpose built, felt lined, slip case, also made by Bayntun, with a step for the shorter Looking Glass volume and red silk pull-tie. Covered in deep red cloth. Fine.

Illustrated with ten wood engraved vignettes and decorative head piece on the first page, plus one leaf with four lines of music, for voice and violin, for the song The Southern Breezes. Page edges a bit creased and rubbed and a small stain to the rear blank wrap, but overall a very good copy. Contains a short anti slavery verse, simply entitled The Slave. --- Rare. No copies listed on Worldcat or Copac. "One class of literature which Jemmy Catnach made â by reason of greater mechanical skill and a larger capital than his rivals â almost his own, was children's farthing, halfpenny, and penny books." - The history of the Catnach press by Charles Hindley. 1886. Catnach was publishing at this address between c. 1813 and his retirement in 1838.

Two pages with minor blemishes but overall a bright and clean copy in the original colour printed dustwrapper, which reproduces the board illustrations and lettering. Some minor bumping to the board edges. One small closed tear (less than 1 inch) to the bottom front hinge of the wrapper, which also has some light creasing to the edges but overall this is a superior copy of the notoriously rare book. ---- A better than very good First edition of Judith Kerr's first, and most beloved book. Never out of print and with sales exceeding 5 million copies, it has been animated for television and adapted into a hugely successful stage play. The first edition is rare, especially so in the original dust-jacket.
