About This Item

New York. Frederick A. Stokes. 1904. Bound in a superb pictorial decorated cloth with colour depiction of "Mammy" (in full Aunt Jemima Garb) pestering a London Beefeater at the Tower of London. 8vo. First Edition. Illustrated throughout with deliciously politically incorrect full page monochrome plates by Francis P. Wightman. Without a doubt, one of the most superb examples of early 20th century American racist stereotyping we've encountered. Written in complete "Negro dialect" the story documents the adventures of Mammy's excursion to the Coronation of King Edward VII and her subsequent sightseeing about London. A hilarious if not terribly offensive portrait of American cultural sensibilities and sensitivities at the dawn of the 20th century. An extremely rare title in this genre. Some minor soiling to covers. Previous owners ink stamp to front pastedown and front free endhseet. Childs crayon to text page 3 with some corresponding to text page 2. One other incidents of very small light smudging to page 168. A Near Fine, tight and crisp copy of this remarkable artifact.
