Some minor offsetting to the blank endpapers but overall a clean and tidy copy of this scarce book.

Illustrated with hand coloured lettering and illustration to the title page and 24 hand coloured lino cut illustrations, each one above two verses of printed text. On the blank pages opposite somebody has written out in a neat early hand the English translation of the first 15 sets of verse. Possibly inscribed by the author, in English, on the blank leaf opposite the title page 'To Muriel with much love and best wishes! Christmas 1938. Franz and Elizabeth'. Original oatmeal coloured paper covered boards with title printed in outline and hand coloured, to the front panel. Spine of the outer wrapper is split, a little chipped and edges rubbed but overall a very good copy of this charming and rare book. No copies listed on Copac or Worldcat.

Illustrated throughout with 94 line engravings by John Tenniel, each with double ruled line borders printed in red and blue. A lovely clean copy finely bound, by Maurin, in contemporary full dark blue morocco. Spine with two raised bands, each with gilt wavy lines. Compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt, including the March Hare within a floral border. Double ruled gilt border on both boards with circular gilt illustration of Alice carrying the pig on the front board. Board edges with gilt ruled line. Gilt inner dentelles and double ruled borders. Multi coloured floral endpapers. Top edge gilt. Purple silk page marker. A bump to the top outer corner of the lower board, but otherwise a near fine copy in an attractive mid twentieth century fine binding.

A handful of pages with a light brown mark to the bottom of the page, otherwise a fresh and clean copy, finely bound in recent full dark blue morocco. Spine with raised bands, the compartments ruled and decorated in gilt. Twin black morocco labels, ruled and lettered in gilt. Single gilt ruled border on boards. Top edge gilt. A lovely copy of this classic.

Illustrated throughout with ninety-two (42 +50) fabulous line engravings by John Tenniel. Very good clean copy in fine leather binding of half dark green morocco for Charles E. Lauriat of Boston. Spine with five raised bands, each with gilt piping. Compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Boards covered in Mid green cloth on boards, with the gilt stamp of Brooks School, Andover, Massachusetts seal on the front board. Top edge gilt. Plain green endpapers. Minor fading to the spine but overall a very good copy in an attractive fine binding. The binding is unsigned but is certainly the work of a master Bookbinder.

Aside from some brown marking to one page, this is generally a very good copy, illustrated throughout with Shepard`s beautiful line drawings. Finely bound in recent full dark green morocco leather binding, spine with raised bands, ruled, decorated and lettered in gilt. Single gilt ruled border on boards. Top edge gilt. Original dark green cloth front cover, showing Toad, Ratty and Mole, all in gilt, bound in at rear. ----- The thirty eighth edition overall, this is the first to feature the wonderful drawings by Shepard which haven't been out of print since. After his drawings for the A. A. Milne Pooh books, these are Shepard's most enduring, & endearing, illustrations.

Rear board with blind stamped floral roll to the top and bottom. Floral decorative endpapers. Neat two line inscription to the front free endpaper. The rear endpapers have an early previous owner's name and address written in red crayon to the free endpaper and a few short lines to the pastedown.
