Sabin was the leading Americana dealer of the late 19th century & a bookseller best remembered today for his "Bibliotheca Americana, or books relating to America" listing over 100,000 items. This remains an important reference tool. Sabin was born in England, apprenticed in the book trade at Oxford & came to America in 1848. During his career he made many trips to Europe in search of books as an importer and he alternated between bookselling & book auctioneering & catalogued several important collections of U.S.iana in the early 1850's in which he devoted himself to being an Americana specialist & in 1859 made his first proposal for a massive Americana bibliography which the beginning was issued in 1867 amid his active business & numerous auctions. Sabin, known as a non-stop cataloging machine died in 1881 from overwork after carrying his Bibliotheca to the middle of letter "M'. It was completed by the young bookseller Eames & a team of others, finally in 1935. Sabin saw bibliography as both useful reference and a sales tool & from 1867 onward many more private collectors entered the field & a number of private institutions stepped up purchasing & the market boomed with Sabin the leader & he built the largest import export business in the field of Americana & conducted some auctions of notable collections of rarities. Sabin's book stock became the most ambitious collection of Americana with books concerning America dating back to 1600 but he also listed in his catalogs many important works in other fields.
