Lion and Kangaroo; the Initiation of Australia 1901 -- 1919by Souter, Gavin and Molnar, George
DescriptionSydney: Collins, 1976. 344 pp, 14 color illustrations, 35 black and white illustrations, six in text drawings, appendix, bibliography, index. Endpapers decorated with Australian coat of arms. In colour illustrated dustwrapper. There is a slight nick the top of page 47, otherwise the book appears to be without fault. This book covers an immense panorama from the South African veldt to the battlefields of the Somme, from the Constitutional Convention of the late nineteenth century to the peace conference of 1919, from the first empire day in 1985 to the slaughter at Gallipoli, from a leisurely Edwardian cruises "home" to Ross Smith's extraordinary London -- Melbourne flight in 1919. Running through all these events, and through the evolving character of the "independent Australian Briton", were the dual sentiments of imperial and national loyalty. Where the tribes are central Australia devoted their rites of passage to such totems as emu and native cat, the Anglo-Saxon and Celtic Tribes of Melbourne and Sydney devoted many affairs to the lion and the kangaroo. Here is the initiation of Australia.. First Edition. Red Cloth Gilt Spine. Good/Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. History.
