A thoroughly detailed account of Commodore Perry's expedition to Japan in 1852. Perry armed with a letter from the president of the United States Millard Fillmore, set sail for Japan in order to open peaceful trading negotiations with the group of islands which had hitherto all been sealed off from foreign countries. The presence of Perry's heavily armed ships in the Bay of Edo forced the Emperor to enter negotiations with the United States Government. After much discussion, the ports of Hakodate and Shimoda were opened to American ships and trade between to two nations was officially sanctioned. |
