SIGNED PHOTOGRAPHby JOHNSON, Lyndon Baines and JOHNSON, Lady Bird
Book description: Glass cracked, needs replacing. Fine, handsome presentation.. A fine black-and-white photograph (7-1/2" x 10-3/4") matted and framed to an overall size of 13" x 17". The photo depicts the President and Lady Bird standing in front of the White House painting of Abraham Lincoln. On the mat beneath the photograph in the hand of Lady Bird is INSCRIBED "To His Excellency the President of the Republic/of Liberia and Mrs. Tubman - / with warm best/wishes - Lady Bird Johnson/March 27, 1968." Next to the First Lady's signature and beneath his image the President has also SIGNED the mat. William V. S. Tubman was the President of Liberia from 1943 to 1971. Under his leadership the Liberian Government declared war on the Axis Powers, women were given the right to vote, and racial discrimination was outlawed. He died in office in 1971 and was replaced by the Liberian Vice-President, William Tolbert, Jr. Surely some thought went into the setting for this photograph as it was President Lincoln who, as the Great Emancipator, recognized the independence of Liberia in 1862 during the American Civil War. Prior to the Presidency of Lincoln, Liberia was not recognized as a country because earlier presidents were reluctant to accept a black ambassador in Washington, DC. Liberia declared its independence in 1847 and based its constitution on that of the United States. Personal State gifts given by the President of the United States to another country's leader are rarely offered in the marketplace. Given Johnson's civil rights record, this item is all the more exceptional.
