Book desription: Mercer University Press. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 1982. Hard Cover. Edited by Louis Schmier. Includes letters to Rabbi Edward B.M. Browne. From the publisher: Concerning the historical relationships of the Jews to the American South, there are at least two opposing views. One historian may conclude that 'everywhere [the Jew is] the eternal alien; and in the South [he is] especially so.' Another historian may find that 'Jews (in the South are) not aliens in a Promised Land, but blood-and-bones part of the South itself - Jewish Southerners.' Louis Schmier (a Jewish Southern historian) concludes that the second is the more correct of these two views. The problem - Schmier suggests - is that Jews and Jewry in the South have been given only short shrift by the historians who have turned their attention almost exclusively toward the Jews of the great Northeast metropolises. In order to encourage and support the preservation, documentation, and dissemination of the important history of the Jewish presence in the American South, the Southern Jewish Historical Society was formed in May 1977. The present volume is one tangible result of that new society's primary purpose - to collect and make known the historical records of the Jew in the South. .
